Shaw Carpets began in 1846 as Philadelphia Carpets Company producing velvet carpets for the finest homes in the Philadelphia area. In 1946, a separate company called Star Dye Company was formed - they dyed rugs, spreads and robes. In 1958 Star Dye began to involve themselves in dyeing carpet and in 1967 a holding company was formed by one of Star's owners to acquire Philadelphia Carpet Company (Philadelphia Holding Company).
